Azania Imtiaz Patel

Azania Imtiaz Patel is a journalist and researcher with extensive experience in global affairs, public policy, and technology reporting.

As a journalist, she has been affiliated with The Economist, across several roles.  As a Foreign Desk Intern, she covered defense technology and human development issues, with assignments that took her to Kenya and a British military base. She later worked as a Research Consultant for the Economist Intelligence Unit, focusing on child sexual assault laws in the US. In her most recent role at The Economist, she contributed to The Modi Raj podcast, providing in-depth research and field insights during Indian elections.

In April 2023, Azania joined The Stack as a Tech Policy Reporter, covering policy developments across the UK, US, and EU, and representing the publication at major industry events such as the OpenSourceSummit and the Linux Foundation Summit. She is currently associated with the Ellison Institute of Technology as a Talent Scout for South and Central Asia. Her work has appeared in various peer-reviewed publications and mainstream media, including the Economic and Political Weekly, Aeon+ Psyche, CBC, BBC Radio 4, The Times (India), Metro Online, and Brown History.


Azania’s academic background includes a BA (Hons) in Liberal Arts from NMIMS Mumbai and dual master’s degrees from the University of Oxford: an MSc in Modern South Asia and an MSc in Public Policy, which she studied as a Rhodes Scholar. Her work reflects a blend of rigorous academic training and practical experience, making her a significant voice in understanding and addressing contemporary global challenges.
