Dr. Ziyaad Bhorat is Vice President of Imagination and Strategic Growth at Mozilla Foundation, where he works on long-term institutional strategy and helps develop partnerships and investment structures that support alternative technology futures. A South African political theorist who researches automated technologies and democratic governance, Ziyaad draws insights from the history of political thought. His work has been published in academic and general audience outlets across the US, UK, and South Africa, on topics ranging from Aristotle to AI judges. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he also received his M.A. He also holds an MBA, and an M.Sc. (African Studies) from the University of Oxford, studying there as a Rhodes Scholar.
His work on technology and politics has been published in The Hill, Noema Magazine, CNBC, and openDemocracy. He previously served as a fellow at the Berggruen Institute and as a Technology and Human Rights fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University.
