Equitech Futures Announces Kevin Xu Innovation Challenge Semi-Finalists

We are proud to announce the semi-finalists for the Kevin Xu Innovation Challenge, selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants drawn from the Equitech Scholar, Atlantic Fellow, Rhodes Scholar, and Rise Fellow (18+) networks. The semi-finalists span two tracks — non-profit and commercial — and represent ventures using AI to expand human capability across health, civic life, education, and economic opportunity.

As part of the Rhodes Forum on Technology & Society, the Kevin Xu Innovation Challenge invites bold, early-stage ideas that explore a pressing question: as AI becomes more embedded in everyday life, how do we ensure it strengthens the capacities that make us most human rather than eroding them? The semi-finalists below were selected for the way they take up that charge, each pointing to a different facet of human capacity that AI can strengthen rather than replace.

Azeem Khan — HumanKey HumanKey is a decision-support AI that helps elderly Japanese adults navigate confusing scam or administrative letters on their own terms — explaining the document, teaching the underlying rule, and offering real choices, with family looped in only if the older adult chooses.

Vedika Bagla — AIdea AIdea gives India's small and micro business owners access to enterprise-grade expertise through AI "teammates," piloting with a WhatsApp-based AI marketing assistant built for owner-operators like independent boutique owners.

Hameeda Syed — Together for Tomorrow Together for Tomorrow is an AI-powered practice tool, grounded in community dialogue work, that helps people build the skills to navigate political disagreement and reduce polarization.

Alejandro José Gómez Hernández — FirstVote GT FirstVote GT is a mobile-first AI civic coach helping the more than 3 million eligible Guatemalans — especially young, rural, and migrant citizens — get registered ahead of the 2027 election through plain-language guidance and non-partisan civic education.

Rise Fellows

Atreya Manaswi — Auxo Health Auxo Health is an AI co-pilot that helps independent musculoskeletal clinics fight back against the insurance paperwork burden driving doctors out of independent practice, drafting claims, appeals, and prior authorizations with mandatory human approval on every consequential action.

Malaika Naseer — Sierra Leone Neurosurgical Nursing This venture (Neurobyte) has built an AI reflection, repository, and assistant tool that captures the hard-won clinical reasoning of neurosurgical ward nurses in Sierra Leone, answering bedside questions offline over WhatsApp.

Cheri Claire Ho Gan — pAInter pAInter is a marketplace where illustrators train and license their own consistent-style AI models — keeping attribution, control over permitted uses, and a share of revenue from every paid generation.

Atlantic Fellows

Adolfo Garcia — TELL TELL is an on-device tool that extracts interpretable speech biomarkers — validated across low- and middle-income-country languages — to support detection of neurodegenerative disease with named cognitive functions instead of a black-box score.

Melikte Paulos Weldetensaye — Lend a Hand Lend a Hand is a non-profit venture combining founder credibility with a clear analog model in the space.

Rhodes Scholars

Magdalene Mawugbe — SignTalkGH SignTalkGH is a bi-directional AI Ghanaian Sign Language interpreter, trained on more than 85,000 GhSL clips, built to give Deaf patients confidential communication in clinical settings and, eventually, as a consumer app.

Laura Wegner — Selv Selv is a personal-health AI that runs single-patient "N-of-1" experiments across a person's wearables, labs, and calendar data, handing clinicians a one-page summary of what's actually changed for that individual patient.

Daliso Zuze — TrialSage TrialSage is an AI agent that turns fragmented clinical trial data systems into a single prioritized action queue for trial coordinators, with a human-approval gate on every regulated action.

David Oluigbo — Socrates.AI Socrates.AI is a venture led by a three-person team of co-equal officers spanning strategy, impact, and technology.

About the Challenge

In partnership with the Rhodes Trust and the Kevin Xu Initiative at the University of Chicago, the Kevin Xu Innovation Challenge invites scholars and fellows across Equitech Futures' partner networks to develop early-stage, AI-powered ventures in response to this year's theme: ensuring that as AI becomes more embedded in everyday life, it strengthens — rather than erodes — the capacities that make us most human. Semi-finalists were selected through a structured evaluation process assessing fit with the challenge, feasibility, founder fit, stage readiness, and innovation.
