Equitech Futures is proud to congratulate Anna Upreti, a 2021 Equitech Futures Institute alumna from India, on being selected for the Cambridge ERA:AI Fellowship. This fully funded research program runs 10 weeks from July to September in Cambridge, England. ERA, a non-profit talent program in the United Kingdom, stands for the Existential Risk Alliance.
During the Fellowship, ERA fellows will develop and complete a research project on technical or governance measures to mitigate the risks posed by frontier AI systems. They have the support of ERA’s research managers, mentors, and wider institutional network. This year's cohort will focus their research on either technical AI governance or technical AI safety.
The ERA Fellowship has run annually since 2021. They have supported more than 85 early career researchers from 10 countries, spanning projects related to AI safety, biosecurity, nuclear security, and extreme climate change mitigation. The fellowship shifted its focus to AI safety and governance research in 2024.
Earlier this year, we profiled Anna's leadership at Sarvam, India's sovereign AI model, where she serves as a research engineer and was instrumental in writing the constitution for the model.
"Knowing, at such a hard time for me, that it was okay — that I was fine, that I was good — and having support from people from literally around the world taught me to do well," she said of her time in the Equitech Futures Institute. "It gives me the strength and the power to raise my hand and say: excuse me, I'm here."
